Pieces Announces $13.5M Series A Funding to 10x Developer Productivity with Real-Time Workflow Assistance

Pieces, an on-device AI coding assistant that boosts developer productivity, has successfully raised $13.5 million in Series A funding, led by Drive Capital.

Cincinnati, OH - 07/10/2024 - Pieces, a suite of on-device AI productivity tools for developers, has successfully raised $13.5 million in Series A funding, led by Drive Capital with participation from Cintrifuse Capital, RedHawk Ventures, and other investors.

Pieces will use the latest financing to accelerate the development of its next-generation workflow copilot that takes AI coding assistance beyond the IDE, and to scale its suite of tools to teams and enterprises around the globe.

"Over the past two years, the role of software developers has changed drastically due to a dramatic increase in the amount of digital materials they interact with on a daily basis, leading to lost work, cold starts, and chaotic workflows." said Tsavo Knott, CEO and Technical Co-Founder of Pieces. “Pieces has designed an integrated product suite that augments a developer’s existing toolset, helping them navigate this complexity by removing a lot of manual processes and overhead.”

Their latest advancement was developing the world’s first temporally grounded copilot, powered by live context windows for LLMs. This cutting-edge technology enables Pieces to capture and process relevant workflow data from a user’s desktop computer, contextualizing local or cloud-based LLMs in real-time while maintaining air-gapped security. Today, these ambitious capabilities are being surfaced to over a hundred thousand users through the launch of Pieces Copilot+ in its desktop application and suite of integrations for web browsers and IDEs such as Google Chrome, VS Code, Visual Studio, the JetBrains suite, Obsidian, and more.

Live Context is designed to understand and adapt to your workflow, allowing the Pieces Copilot+ to provide relevant assistance based on when, where, and how you work–enabling developers to ask questions such as “How can I adapt this code based on my research yesterday?”, “Generate action items based on my team’s Slack conversation”, and “Summarize the code changes in this pull request”.

Pieces streamlines development across the three major pillars of a developers workflow:

  • Researching and Problem Solving in the Browser: Local edge-ML models automatically enrich code saved to Pieces, helping developers find and reuse snippets easily. Live Context can extract key information from research and ensure that valuable insights are never lost.

  • Coding in the IDE: Pieces can help developers comment, explain, debug, review, and refactor single functions or entire complex repositories.

  • Collaborating with Teammates: Pieces simplifies communication and project management with rich code sharing, conversation summaries, and recaps of open tasks through a comprehensive understanding of organization dynamics.

  • The Crossover Between Each Pillar: Pieces ensures seamless transitions between tasks and tools with deep integrations and temporal context, maintaining workflow continuity and reducing context switching.

"This launch is a step function in conversational copilots," Knott added. "It is the first AI assistant with live context across your entire operating system, reducing the number of searching events and copilot conversations you need to have by giving you what you need before you even realize you need it."

“Corporations could really benefit from leveraging the Pieces tech platform and their AI coding assistant, which can boost developer productivity,” said J.B. Kropp, Managing Director at Cintrifuse Capital. “They are building a world-class team that could have a significant impact on our startup community.”

About Pieces

Pieces has evolved through three significant phases to address the increasing complexity of developer workflows while maintaining air-gapped security as a primary product philosophy since day one. Phase I, initiated in late 2020, introduced an AI-enabled micro-repository that automatically generated metadata for saved workstream materials. In late 2022, Phase II expanded capabilities with the first-gen Pieces Copilot, enabling conversational interactions with saved materials and incorporating LLMs.

Phase III, launched in 2023, introduced Pieces Copilot+ with Live Context for LLMs, offering real-time contextual support across all major operating systems, either offline or connected to the cloud. This focus on security continues to benefit our users and gives us a competitive edge over other AI systems. This evolution aims to harmonize human-AI workstreams, enhancing productivity and reducing the overhead of context switching and documentation.
