Introducing the Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension 🎉

We’re proud to announce our newest Pieces integration: The Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension!

Pieces Suite

1.1.9

We’re proud to announce our newest Pieces integration: The Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension! Our users request support for their favorite tools all the time, and we work hard to build high-quality integrations that will keep you in your development flow.

This initial launch of the Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension includes support for Windows and our most popular feature, Pieces Copilot. We look forward to adding support for more features and operating systems in future releases!

Installation

To install the Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension, open Visual Studio and head to the Visual Studio Marketplace. You can install Pieces by hitting the Download button on the marketplace page.

You can also install Pieces directly from your Visual Studio IDE! Open the Extensions tab in your sidebar and search for “Pieces for Developers”. You can then install it by hitting the “Install” button.

In either case, installing the Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension will require you to restart your IDE, and you’ll need to separately download Pieces OS. As a reminder, this extension is compatible with VS2022 17.9 and higher and is only available for Windows users! We hope to add support for Linux soon.

Using Pieces Copilot

Pieces Copilot is one of our favorite (and most popular) features. It allows you to ask questions about your code, solve problems, and learn more about your codebase without leaving your IDE. We’re excited to bring these context-rich features to Visual Studio.

Pieces Copilot will automatically open if you have an open solution. If you’d like to open it yourself, navigate to View > Other Windows > Pieces Copilot. From the copilot window, you can start new conversations, set your copilot context, and choose a different copilot runtime (including local and cloud models). For more detailed information about any of these processes, check out our documentation.

User Settings

This initial version of the Pieces for Developers Visual Studio Extension includes a few user settings that you can use to customize your experience.

  • Automatically Copy Link: If you turn this on, the Pieces Shareable Links you generate will be automatically copied to your clipboard and ready to be sent to your friends and teammates.

  • Cloud Capabilities: Choose if you’d like for Pieces to use Cloud, Local, or Blended machine learning models.

  • Custom Pieces OS URL: If you’re using a custom Pieces OS URL, update it here.
